Collaboration Project – A Vignelli Dialogue
Folkwang University of the Arts | Industrial Design, Prof. Marion Digel, Sebastian Goldschmidtböing
Rochester Institute of Technology | Industrial Design, Josh Owen | Vignelli Distinguished Professor of Design, Director- Vignelli Center of Design Studies
Lella and Massimo Vignelli, have set standards for Design and Modernism in the United States and Europe in the 20th century. With their credo „Design is One“ they proposed a holistic view on Design and with the „Vignelli Canon“ they postulated a philosophy and criteria for timelessness in Design.
Students from RIT and Folkwang are invited to get deeply involved with the Vignelli ethos, being able to access the treasures of the Vignelli Archives and receiving input by guest lecturers (Vignelli Experts) and lecturers from both institutions. Josh Owen and Marion Digel had the privilege to have known Lella and Massimo Vignelli in person and they both had several conversations on Design with the couple.
It is the task for the students to transform their experiences into the design of a product, a system or concept of their own choice, reflecting the Vignelli philosophy in regard to future questions concerning environmental, social or technological developments such as AI or the distribution of information on social media.
It is the goal to juxtapose a Design philosophy born in 20th century Modernism with the challenges of current and future developments in the 21st century. The reflection of these design developments and their results in relation to the Vignelli Ethos are the core elements for the design transformations.
The results will possibly be published in an article or book (online or print) and displayed in an exhibition in the Vignelli Center at RIT and/or at the SANAA Building at Folkwang University of the Arts. (This will depend on the development of the Covid 19 Pandemic)
Since the schedules of the terms at RIT and Folkwang vary, the project will follow the principle of „Passing the Torch“. Folkwang students will be able to look into work of RIT students from their spring term, who will pass the torch to the Folkwang students, who then again will pass it to the next course of RIT students etc. There will be overlapping appointments over the time from April 2021 - September 2021. An exact schedule will follow. |
