Unboxing Black Boxes
“A black box that can be opened is not a black box.”— Philipp von Hilgers: The History of the Black Box, 2011

We live in the age of the Black Box: governments, vacuum cleaners, TikTok, the Internet, film stars, even our brain. They are all black in the sense that they hide certain information about their complex inner constitution and workings while leaking hints about themselves at selected interfacing points. In fact, a black box begs to be interfaced: only through interaction with the external world, it comes to life. But the box is also deeply political: it determines who sees what, how much, when and where, and not everyone is granted the same rights.
As designers, we are used to striving for transparency. Knowing not only the surface but the designed object as a whole gives us the power to intervene and modify it from any possible angle at any point in time. In this seminar, we will dive into a world which turns this relationship inside out. Through theory and practice, we will dissect and experiment with ambiguous interfaces, lazy images, non-human avatars, grumpy bots, but also our bodies as portals into deliberately messy worlds: Reality TV without reality. Will we be able to unbox the black box?
Please note that most of the materials we will discuss will be provided in English.
