Throughout the 19th century, scientists transformed living animals into dried, stuffed, and otherwise preserved scientific specimens. Today science seeks to transform these lifeless specimens into living creatures through the emerging science of De-Extinction. The project 'Archiv of Extinction' evokes questions about re-animating forms of life and about the human role in disassembling past and reassembling future ecologies.
We will critically reflect on these developments by applying animation (Latin anima: life, breath) to its origins: as a medium to create life through the illusion of movement. During the project, we will cover key conceptual elements of time-based media, such as short-range apparent motion, dramatic staging, mis-en-scene, line of action, characterization, and narrative arc. In short, projects will explore animation with hand-drawn images on paper, 2D images in a digital environment, and stop-motion animation using physical objects. Screenings and discussions will cover animated works from the history of Experimental Animation.
